Meet the Director of "Nail Polish," Leah Castillo

How would you describe your film and the inspiration behind it?

My film is a heartwarming story about breaking social norms, overcoming bullying, and friendship. The inspiration behind it was actually one of my favorite youtubers as a child named Tyler Oakley, he paved the way for youtubers and helped masses of young boys feel more open in expressing what our culture deems to be femininity. I have a little brother and want him and his friends to know what it truly means to be yourself.

What has been your favorite part of working on this project?

My favorite part of this project so far has been the screenplay's positive feedback from my young actors and their families. I was worried that the film's bad language, blatant bullying, and the breaking social norms would not sit well with parents and kids in our community. But, I have been surprised with all of the positive comments and really happy to have a supportive network of actors and families.

What was it like working collaboratively with the rest of the team?

My team is very helpful, supportive of the film's goal, and willing to devote all the time and effort the film needs to thrive. We are in constant communication, looking for ways to help each other out.

What films have been the most inspiring or influential to you and why?

The movie Wonder that recently came out that just made me so connected to the main character. It has a similar bullying theme and utilizes friendship as a tool to overcome bullying.

Based on your experience making this film, what is one piece of advice you have for first time filmmakers?

First time filmmakers, planning and collaboration is everything. Your team and your storyboards are everything if you want it to go smoothly.
